Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health
At The Avenue School our curriculum includes teaching Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health. We believe that effective Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health is crucial to developing and maintaining the emotional and physical health of our pupils. We recognise children and young people with special needs and disabilities can be more vulnerable in society to abuse, or child-on-child abuse and, or sexual harassment. Learning about RSE also ensure our pupils are taught about safeguarding risks and supported to understand “what constitutes a healthy relationship”.
At The Avenue School our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health curriculum reflects the needs of our children and young people with autism, speech language and communication difficulties and severe learning difficulties.
At The Avenue School, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health is taught across the curriculum through the curriculum themes and daily activities. It is differentiated and personalised according to individual maturation, levels of understanding and communication skills as well as social and emotional needs. Our RSE curriculum aims to equip pupils with information, skills and positive values to have, safe, fulfilling relationships. RSE for pupils with SEND is part of life-long learning, it begins at Reception and continues throughout formal education and beyond. We start with core concepts such as public and private, using correct terms for body parts, promoting an understanding of rights relating to our bodies, rules relating to touch, positive friendships, respect and consent. As pupils grow older they are taught to recognise and understand changes in their bodies relating to puberty. At The Rise Partnership Trust we are committed to our mission of 'Love, Learn, Laugh’ and this ethos is evident through our approach to RSE and PSHE.
